Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu (SGJ)

Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu means (The study of Close Quarter Combat for Personal Protection ) is a simple system that will consist of Punching, Kicking, Joint Manipulation, Throws, Submission Techniques, and Non-lethal Restraining Techniques. SGJ will use Kata to show and teach basics to our students. We are not a new system because there is nothing new under the sun. It all has been done before and will done after we are gone. The System of Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu also known as Surrett Mixed Martial Arts was founded by Clyde Surrett in the early 90's and is nothing more than a system of basics. I changed the name after many years of research and added Jujitsu, Judo, and Improvised Weapons to the SGJ curriculum. In fact this system is a Freestyle system that uses the Kata Oyo (Bunkai) from Karate. What does Freestyle mean? it simply means that anything that works will be used, we do have a set of basics that we require. We encourage our students to think about every technique. It is not important that we know hundreds of techniques, but be able to execute the techniques that we do know with power and precision.

Kata is a series of self-defense movements that are used to teach the students simple and complex techniques. SGJ will not use our Kata as in sport karate, but instead will break down each move and pull from those Kata the secrets moves that each Kata has. A simple Kata such as Taikyoku has many moves that would take a life time to master. Which I think is ok, Taikyoku is the usually the first Kata of any system but that is not the case with SGJ. Our first Kata is Roku Empi (6 elbows) this simple Kata teaches our student the value of a well placed elbow strike. The elbow is not a fast strike, but it is a very powerful technique, in Roku Empi the student will learn simple joint Manipulation using the elbow, they will learn how to block the opponents strikes, learn to move while striking. Roku Empi has a couple of very common stances, Horseback riding stance (Kiba dachi), Front Stance (Zenkutsu Dachi) and Back Stance (Kokutsu dachi). So I think this Kata is a great Choice to be the first one I taught to my students. There is one Kata that is an American Kata, and that is Dance of the Winds, This Kata was developed by Sensei Roger Jones, and taught to me by Patrick Bohannon founder of Akaikai Karate, within this Kata is trapping, joint locking, Defecting, Grabbing, and a lot of punching and kicking. Dance of the Winds is set in an X pattern and is fairly easily learned in fact it was the first Kata I learned, and I love to run it.

The next seven Kata are from Shotokan, and most of them run in an I pattern, these Kata are the very basics of many Traditional Martial Arts, with each one getting a little harder the student can see themselves growing in skill and in knowledge. I will modify the Kata according to the needs of each student. SGJ will not use these Kata as a tool to promote Sport Karate, but we will try to break each one down Technique by Technique to use as Self-Defense. So our students will learn each Kata as a Full Kata, and will learn the value of all the Hidden throws, Takedowns, Pressure points striking, joint locks, submission holds and more. If our students would like to compete in Sport Karate with these Kata then we will help them to do so, I am not against Sport Karate Training I think it has many benefits for the young and the senior students. As a Teacher I want my students to know the difference between a fight in the ring and a fight for your life on the Street!

In order to comply with our system all Kata may be modified to be used as if the student was actually fighting in a real street fight, I want my students to get a feel of what it is to be is a real fight without the danger.

  • Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu does not teach "acrobatic" kicks

  • Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu has no hard blocks or stances
  • Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu does not teach "Traditional" weapons like Bo (staff) sword, or Nunchaku. We teach Magazine, Pen, Pencil, belt and other Self Defense tools
  • Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu teaches our own Stick and Knife program (Nothing Fancy)
  • Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu teaches firearms disarming techniques and firearms retention
  • Sekkinsen Goshin-Jitsu is flexible, dynamic and eclectic, continues to evolve
